History

The airline was founded and started operations in 1990 as Varna International Airways using a brand new Tupolev Tu-154M aircraft. Having been established by a group of private Bulgarian investors, it initially and operated charter flights for BG Tours, Neckermann and TUI from Germany, as well as for Jetair (Belgium) and Prodintour (France). At that time, the company had 142 employees.[1]

In 2005, Air VIA decided to replace its Tupolev fleet with more modern Airbus A320-200 aircraft.
